Great Wall: Be cautious!

  • Beijing Great Wall
  • Great Wall at Mutianyu

  • Be cautious when climbing the Great Wall! Anywhere it can be very steap and the steps don't have the same height! Wear good shoes and take a waterbottle with you, when you visit the Great Wall. Everything you buy at this place is very expensive!!

    Warnings Or Dangers: Chinese Tourists
  • Tip Rating:
  • To visit Bejing and the Forbidden City is a highlight in the live of every Chinese! People are very curious and have to examine just everything. Not fence no sign "Do not!" can stop them!!

This just represents my sometime Love/Hate relationship with Chinese people: I love the way, they look at everything with the wide open eyes of children. But I hate, that they touch everything and with this touching destroy a lot of ancient art!

    Toilets: Toilets

  • Toilets in China are normally of the squatting type. They tend to be dirty. To help you find a nice and clean one I found this wonderful website:

    www.thebathroomdiaries.com

Things are changing to the better now at least in Beijing. So I added a pic of a very clean public toilett with solar energy and music. At least at places, where many tourist are, the toilets are nice and clean. Better don't try the toilets in the normal living quarters of the local people!

    Pollution: Pollution
  • Tip Rating:
  • Pollution is a serious problem in Beijing. Specially in winter, when still many people heat thei rooms with coal.

More and more cars are crowding the streets. They add to the pollution.

Be prepared, that after a while of walking around in Beijing you'll get a headake. Take some aspirin with you.

  • When you walk on the Great Wall to the North you'll find a German Beergarden! Who really needs a German Beergarden on top of the Great Wall? But, if you cannot live without German Weisswurst and Koelsch Beer, then here is the internet-adress:

    Der Landgraf

    Warnings Or Dangers: Olympics 2008
  • Tip Rating:
  • As Beijing is preparing to host the Olympic Games 2008, everything is now being cleaned up. Many monuments are vanishing behind scaffoldings, as renovations works have started almost everywhere. The works at the Temple of Heaven and Coal Hill are completed. But now half of Forbidden City is a mess with lots of renovation. (2007)
