I would always recommend the Pujiang Hotel! Nice and clean and cheap! Large clean dormitories and rooms. The hotel is always packed with backpackers.

The building itself is more than 100 years old. It has been the Astor-Hotel in 19th century. Some famous travellers like Charly Chaplin and Albert Einstein stayed here.

Unique Qualities: Unique are the now renovated big rooms with high ceilings and a big bathroom. The best is of course the location: only a few minutes walk away from the famous bund and shopping street Nanjing Lu. The renovated rooms are said to have 4-star-quality, but the overall quality like facilities and restaurants is more for the backpackers.

I did not stay in Ocean Hotel myself, but the touroperator, which I work for, has this hotel as the hotel for our tourgroups in Shanghai. Just evrybody, who stays in the ocean Hotel is very satisfied. The best is the restaurant on top of the hotel, from where there is a great view of the Pudong Skyline.
