The name "Stadtoldendorf" has the German word for Town "Stadt" and the word for Village "Dorf" in its name. Its original name was Oldendorf, which means "Old Village". In 1255 it became a town with a lot of rights. To distinguish this Oldendorf from the many other villages with the name Oldendorf, it was called Stadtoldendorf.
I visited Stadtoldendorf in February 2007, when there was very bad weather and the day with the heaviest snow in this winter.
Nevertheless I enjoyed the quiet beauty of this hidden gem of Weserbergland. If you want to see a beautiful small and old town in Germany, which is not overcrowded by tourists, then you have to explore the small towns of Weserbergland! Specially Stadtoldendorf is a central place, where to stay and explore more beautiful places like Hameln, Holzminden or Bodenwerder. |
