This relief shows a Khmer king going into war. He even has Chinese soldiers, which you can recognize by the hairdress.
The king is Jayavarman VII. He was a Buddhist king in 13th century. Angkor Thom was build with the towers showing the face of the king, who thought himself to be a reincarnation of Buddha Avalokiteshvara. It is quite interesting to see the reliefs as they not only show war but mainly scenes of every days life, like people on a market or a woman giving birth to a child.
The weather was not as bad as it looks on this photo. Only the day we visited the main temple of Angkor Wat it was grey and a little bit of rain. When you go in September you have to know, that there will be rain.
- In a nutshell:Famous temples - but don't forget to see the market!

Excellent tips on Angkor. Bring back fond memories. SL :)
Hi Ulrike. You have travelled to some exotic destinations. Angkor Wat is on my wish list. Thx for visiting my Beijing page. Greetings from Copenhagen.
Today market in Siem Reab is probably less crowded than the famous temples. Boat tour on lake Tonle Sap sounds exciting even if it's raining.
Great pictures of a destination that I would love to see one day! Rainy weather once again for you, huh? That's too bad!!!!
Yep: "Everything is transient". Good page.
Ulrike, you're an observant photographer, the note about the Chinese soldiers was interesting.
Angkor Wat will stay always mysterious ! Thx for sharing Ulrike
Nice Angkor Wat page. Useful & very accurate tips too.
Angkor is one of the worlds greatest destinations!
wonderful pictures and tips Ulrike, I love the one of the boat on the lake
