<marquee><font color=Darkblue size=+3>Welcome to Charleston's Historic Charm...It's Like a Rhapsody</font></marquee>
Charleston is the most historic location in the state. English settlers arrived in the colony of Carolina in 1670 and established a town at Albemarle Point on the west bank of the Ashley River. The settlement, named Charles Town in honor of King Charles II of England, was subsequently moved a few miles away to a peninsula between the Ashley and Cooper rivers. {insert joke} Don't be surprised if you hear a local say that the Ashley and Cooper rivers meet in Charleston Harbor to form the Atlantic Ocean. ;-) Charles Town (renamed Charleston in 1783) was the political, social, and economic center of South Carolina throughout the colonial and antebellum periods, and it served as the state capital until 1790.
During the Revolutionary War the American forces defeated the attacking British fleet at Charleston in June 1776; a palmetto log fort (later named Fort Moultrie) on Sullivans Island withstood the British cannon balls, and the palmetto tree was subsequently given a prominent place on the South Carolina flag.
At another Charleston fort, Fort Sumter, federal troops were fired on by Confederate forces in April 1861, signalling the start of the Civil War. Although some Charlestonians may tell you there was nothing civil about the war and prefer to refer to it as the "War Between the States." Don't be surprised if you might hear someone else refer to it as the "War of Northern Aggression."
Fast forward many decades...my job in radio brought me to Charleston, South Carolina in 1983. When the company was sold, I started a business so I could stay here. Charleston is rich in heritage and a great lifestyle city. It's large enough to enjoy the culture and cuisine without the hassels of big city life. More than 55% of her visitors have visited here more than once.
Locals sometimes get frustrated by the way tour busses and carriages drive. However they seem to forget what Charleston was like before Charleston was discovered for her historic charm. It is tourism that cleaned up her downtown and revitalized run down areas with beautiful hotels, restaurants and shops.
I will be adding a lot more activities as time permits and with my wife's approval (she told me to say that part). Some of the images were obtained from the Charleston CVB. Enjoy these Charleston scenes.
