Wake Island is still run by the military unlike most of the other USA outer Islands like Midway Atoll and Johnston Atoll that have been made National Wildlife refuges. Midway is now in the hands of the 36th Air Base Wing, Andersen AFB Guam. It had moved from the USAF control to the Army in about 1995, but once again in 2002 back to the USAF. As a flight surgeon in the late 1970es I would log my flight hours required by flying out to the Island in the Pacific from Japan. Wake is where President Truman met Gen McCarthy for the famous dress down and the sight of a major battle in WWII. Wake has really beautiful beaches.
Wake Atoll Island in relationship to other Pacific Islands
Wake Atoll is just West of the international date line so they are one day ahead of Mainland USA and it is just north of the Marshall Islands and that Island nation claims Wake.
To them this is the Kingdom of EnenKio and His Majesty King Remios is the Monarch of the Kingdom Iroijlaplap of the Northern Atolls of the
Ratak Archipelago of the Marshall Islands.
This is the monument at "98 Rock" and was place as a a memorial for the 98 U.S. Prisoners of War who were used as slave labor by the Japanese and made to rebuild the Airstrip after the Americans bombed it in WW II. After finishing the strip they were all lined up blindfolded and machine gunned down. However one person survived and lived long enough to place a marker on the mass grave which you can see it is a coral rock with "98 US PW 5-10-43" etched into it.
