Midway was listed by the National Geographic Traveler as one of the 50 places to see in a lifetime in the USA -- getting there might be easer soon. And may I suggest while you ready Midway you look at the video of the Gooney mating dance

As a USAF flight surgeon living and working in Asia Pacific in the late 1970s I use to fly on a support C-130 that would bring supplies to the small bases on the Pacific Islands. As I remember every Friday a C-130 from the 345th Tactical Airlift Squadron, Yokota AFB would fly to Marcus Island, Wake Island. I recall we us to leave on another day for Midway but it is a while back. Any way on one of the trips I got off and stay on the Island for a week and than got picked up a week later. I was a guest of the Navy Air facility Midway which had just been down graded the year before from a Navy Air Station and they had lots of room as most of the man had left a few months before. I just spent the week birding and exploring the old historical battle site. The navy facility I stayed at in 1979 was closed on Sept 10th 1993. Midway Atoll in relationship to other Pacific Islands

Midway Atoll will be opening soon for tourist to visit this amazing place with something like two or three million birds. This is home to the world’s larges population of gooney birds more respectfully know as the Laysan Albatross and yes one can spend hours watching these well birds be gooney when they take off and land. Also Seals are cool and the Hawaiian Monk seal is hear along with Green turtles Spinner dolphins and just down right beautiful beaches and lagoons. It is also home the Midway Atoll National Memorial. I am writing this on June 3rd 2007 and tomorrow June 4th is the 65th anniversary of the Battle of Midway and there will be about 1600 people celebrating that event on the Island --- Midway Memorial

On June 4th about 1600 people will show up Midway Military Historic Tour has made arraignments for transportation from Honolulu Airport to Midway Island. The cost for the round trip airfare is $1150 per person. BUT in the near future it will open again for Birders and other tourist the National wildlife refugees is planing for ecotourism the numbers will be limited with 30 on the Island at one time in 2007 (about 40 staff live on Midway). starting in 2008 the number will increase to 50 people. so with those kinds of opening travel arraignments will soon follow. The Island is geared up to start guided tours in 2008 and beyond. Keep your eye peeled.
