Federated States of Micronesia

YAP
CHUUK (Truk)
POHNPEI
KOSRAE

Okay listen to some music and watch some dance from POHNPEI

Every diver knows these names and has dream of diving here. It is without question the best diving in the world. Thats right even better than the Barrier reef or the Belize reef.

The new nation of FEDERATED STATES OF MICRONESIA (FSM) is part of what was the Trust Territory of the Pacific Administered for the United Nations by the United States. It is Spread across 2,500 kilometers of the Western Central Pacific Ocean, just north of the equator in the Caroline Islands, the four states of Chuuk, Kosrae, Pohnpei and Yap and their 607 islands are exciting out of the way places to go if you are into diving, fun, exploration, excitement or relaxation on a deserted Island all your own for a few days. The Islands were administered by Germany from 1899 to WWI than by the Japanese from 1914 until 1944. During the Japanese period, extensive settlement resulted in a Japanese population of over 100,000 throughout Micronesia. The indigenous population was then about 40,000. After WWII they were administered by the United States of American. The FEDERATED STATES OF MICRONESIA is knows as a free association it is independent but continues to have a USA association including defense. The Micronesian voted for Independence on July 12 and on the November 3, 1986 The FSM, Republic of the Marshall Islands, and the Republic of Palau were granted an Independent “Compact of Free Association” with the United States. What ever that mean ---On September 17, 1991, the FSM became a member of the United Nations. So you see it is a right proper nation, President, capital flag and all.
CHUUK Kids

People

The People who live in the FSM are classified as Micronesians, although some inhabitants of Pohnpei State are of Polynesian origin. They are actually a mixture with different customs and traditions bound. They speak eight major indigenous languages, although English is widely spoken after some many years of US “protection” The cultural similarities however thought out the Islands is the importance of traditional extended families and clan systems found on each island
I think Yap is the most intriguing island in Micronesia. It is the group of Island with the famous big stone money we all read about in grade school. It is a land steeped in ancient traditions, fascinating legends, and peopled by one of the most distinctive cultures in the Pacific. Attractions like a handmade seaside men's house, cultural village tours, huge, the ancient stone money discs complete with stone money banks, amazing dancing, marine life and mangrove forests make this a dream locatio for a culture lover like me it is really a gem of a unique outpost.
Chuuk Truk Lagoon

Diving

Chuuk, with its vast, shallow, beautiful lagoon is truly A HEAVEN for wreck divers. A major shipwreck site from WWII, Truk Lagoon is unquestionably the world's best shipwreck diving destination. Here, more than 50 hulks have been transformed into shipreefs, holding the very best of the undersea world and maritime history at one site. Hard and soft corals in a kaleidoscope of colors and shapes attract divers worldwide for both daytime and night diving. The vast selection of artifacts still found on the wrecks after five decades are testament to the unique history of the Micronesian Islands. The historical aspect of Truk Lagoon is not totally hidden by the jungles. Japanese lighthouses, perched high atop the lagoon's finest overlooks, can be reached by hiking or driving. Old runways, command centers, gun emplacements, cave networks, hospitals and libraries can be found with the help of a knowledgeable guide.
