| | Well I had the wonderful privilege of living in Yemen and this part of the world for 4 years and it is really out of this world. It is as different a place from the West as anywhere I have been. Sitting in a mufra chewing Gat and learning about Yemen culture priceless as they say. But really this place has deep history Sanaa is thought to be the oldest continuously inhabited city in the world. And, Yemen was a going place 4,000 years ago a real center of civilization. If names like the kingdoms the Sabaean (Queen of Sheba) Minaean, and Himyarite mean anything to you this was the place this all happened. |
When mankind first made it out of Africa some 100,000 years ago they came through Yemen. Next all the spice stuff the lucrative spice trade -- this was here, in Yemen that they grow Frankincense and the Commiphora myrrha tree. Back in the really old days they were rich rich rich. Coffee also comes from Yemen and the very name Mukha, (Mocha,/Mocca) is the port city in Yemen where the Coffee was picked up before Starbucks. Mocca was also where I had to go and get my care when it was shipped in but not before I got my license above. For those who want an even more out of the way place try Socotra | | |

lily255 Tue May 27, 2008 02:23 UTC Sorry, that is incorrect. I have worked there and it is a Hospital Project set up for poor Yemenis, not intended for tourists who can pay privately. It is staffed by mainly Arabs, Phillipinos and Indians. Please do not waste their resources. | hunterV Sat Jan 19, 2008 20:55 UTC You were lucky to stay there for four years! Great! | Luchonda Sat Jul 7, 2007 16:52 UTC Must be on my wishlist aswell - thanx for sharing. | grets Sat Jul 7, 2007 13:29 UTC I'm impressed you've updated with the latest incident. It still hasn't put me off going to Yemen in December. |
