10 degrees North of North

Tiksi In Yakut means a moorage place it is at 71.6° N well above the Arctic circle and the coldest town on the face of the earth (the coldest city is a long ways to the south but in the same part of Russia.

SUN alway SUn

It was a slow day working in Moscow and I wondered over to the travel office and say where all the airports were on a gaint Map which still had in bold letter CCCP across it. There way up North on the Arctic ocean staring out at me on the MAP nd begging to be visited was Tiksi.

Tiksi is a port city in the Sakha Republic, Russia, situated on the Laptev Sea of the Arctic Ocean. It one of those place that are decresing in population do to the combination of vodka and just rying to get out of the cold I guess the Population has gone from almost 20,000 to under 5,000.

ice stretching everywhere

I figured there would not be all that much to do in Tiksi and as a general rule that is correct however if you are interested in walking on a tundra picking berries mushrooms and watching birds this is a ver good place to come to. Also there is a museum in the old port city of Sago with an abandoned coal mine. The Biological researched station "Ust-Lenskii" and the polar station "Lena-Nordensheld" are nearby and good places to go get a cup of coffee and visit with the researchers they seem to like company. Also just hanging out with the hardy people that live this far north is interesting. A climb up Lyalkin Pup mountain is really nice you can see out into the Artic Ocean Ice as far as you can see in June and than look over the Tundra. But line up early for the night club so they will let you in (just kidding).

Enjoy birdwatching too. But doing it in the cold, I have not experienced. What an experience going through the "security"
