Roanoke Island Travel Guide: 19 reviews and 84 photos

Roanoke Island, the site of the first English settlement in the Americas (1584-'87) by Sir Walter Raleigh. Virginia Dare was the first English person born in the Americas in the county that would be named for her centuries later. No one knows what happened to the colonists who had disappeared before Raleigh's return. The best guess is that they assimilated with the local Indians because, it is written that some Indians turned up with blue eyes in the years ahead. For those who like drama, Manteo puts on a play called "The Lost Colony". There are also plenty of shopping and dining opportunities here and all over Roanoke Island.

There are two major towns on the island. Manteo (pronounced MAN-ee-oh) is the county seat of Dare County, North Carolina. It is located on the north end of the island. A much smaller town called Wanchese is on the south end. It is mainly a fishing village with a few small markets and the Fisherman's Wharf restaurant.
