Honolulu was the last leg of my two-week Pacific island tour in July, 1991.

It was a long flight from Auckland to Honolulu. Because we didn't have a chance to take breakfast, I could eat anything (except lamb or meat loaf). Although lamb was again among the selections, I chose the shrimp served over pasta, served with salad, rolls, and yogurt. When the stewardesses began serving the food, Tiffany told me she hoped they ran out of shrimp. (It was well known that I was tired of lamb.) I replied by reminding her that she told me she didn't want to talk to me again. When it was my turn to choose they had not run out of shrimp, and I told the stewardess to serve me any leftover shrimp platters. I had just finished the first meal when the stewardess brought me my second shrimp platter. After that, Gena unexpectedly gave me the rest of her shrimp and pasta because she didn't like it. Therefore, I took 2-3/4 meals. I updated my journal for much of the flight as I hadn't written about the day in Rotorua with the Lamberts or any of the events leading up to the flight or the controversy on it. Because we were to land in a tropical climate, I changed from winter clothing to summer. On this flight, we crossed back over the International Date Line. When we left Auckland, it was 10 July 1991, but halfway to Honolulu, the date became 9 July once again. Therefore, we repeated portions of 9 and all of 10 July. If this is confusing to you, you aren't the only one. I filled out what I was sure was my last immigration card of this trip.

Finally, we landed in Honolulu at 9.30 (local time). Although I had great fun (for the most part) on this trip, it felt good to be back in the United States. The portrait of President Bush with a welcome message in the foyer of the customs area made me feel welcome after a long time abroad. I was even more grateful to be standing after the 10-hour flight. On reclaiming our baggage, we waited a long while for basic transportation to take us to Outrigger Towers in Waikiki. Finally, the tour bus came. On arriving at the hotel, we waited another long while before being able to even go to our rooms and stow our things. When I finally got to it, our hotel was the best of the lot. Unfortunately, it was one at which we would spent the least time. There was a sink and even a microwave oven. I took the lift downstairs to cancel Mr. Rath's wake-up call and meet my parents in the bar for a drink, not an adult beverage, rather a simple but large Coca-Cola. Everything is expensive in Hawaii because a simple Coca-Cola cost $2.00 then. I hate to think what it costs today!

A place I would like to visit one day. You'll have to translate you "Never chug-a-lug your Mai tai" tip into English for me sometime!

Interesting tips! When I travel to Canada (and America) from Taiwan, I usually arrive there at same time I left Taiwan. It definitely feels weird!!!

Glad you were able to see Pearl Harbor. I spent an entire day there, when I was in Honolulu last year.

Good updates. I remember the RH shopping centre well. I also remember how strict they are with hanging clothes on the balconies in Waikiki. I like Kona coffee too.
