b1bob goes to San Francisco

by b1bob - last update: Feb 13, 2004

San Francisco was the first place to which I visited by airplane. I was pushing 16 years old in August 1985 and I went to make sure my (then) 76-year old grandmother got there all right. The flight over there- Raleigh-Durham to JFK, JFK to San Francisco went pretty smoothly. Aunt Natalie, Uncle Dick, and my cousins Scott and Eric met us at the airport. We spent a couple of days in San Francisco where we saw or visited Lombard St., the Ripley's Believe It Or Not Museum, Pier 39 (where the photo of my Grandma was taken), and the Golden Gate bridge. The reason you will see no photos of cable cars on my page is because that was the summer they were all in for repair. Sorry, folks. We spent the rest of the week in Stockton.

The flight back was interesting as we had only a 40 minute layover at Kennedy Airport to start with. We were delayed 37 minutes from the usual morning fog. Of course you know, my Grandma and I missed our connector to Raleigh. This was my first series of flights and I was 15 years old (my Grandma was 76 at the time) so we didn't know what to do. We had to take a cab from the TWA to the Eastern building to get the last flight out of New York going directly to Raleigh. We also had Eastern send a teletype to Raleigh to advise my parents of our late arrival. Eastern 583 was one of the worst flights I had ever been on. The food was horrible (worse than Varig) and they failed to pressurise the cabin properly so I had ear trouble for several days. The funny thing we learned on landing was that, although we missed our flight, our luggage didn't. I don't know how my luggage made a plane we didn't.

Pros:"San Francisco was an interesting first west coast experience."
Cons:"I was surprised by the cool temperatures (in August) and the apparent "anything goes" style of the city."
