Botanical Gardens & U.S. Capitol
I visit the nation's capital regularly because it is relatively close to Richmond and because I went to George Mason University (which is within spitting distance). I usually go there and give friends from way-out-of town the 50-cent tour which includes the Capitol building, the Washington Monument, and the Smithsonian's Air & Space Museum and the Museum of American History.

In April, 1990, when my friend Stefan visited from Germany, we got special White House passes from a congressman which moved us to the head of the queue and gained us access to rooms "off the beaten path" to the regular tour. In one of those extra rooms, Stefan and I saw Barbara Bush together with that ugly reporter Helen Thomas (who must have been there when they laid the cornerstone for the White House).

Second to the 2005 presidential inauguration, my most memourable excellent Washington adventure was when I had to get my tourist visa from the Brazilian Embassy. It was October, 2001, during the height of the anthrax scare, which hobbled several D.C. post offices. So, went up there and hand-delivered my passport and all accompanying paperwork.

Another memourable trip was in March, 2004, when my friend Stefan was visiting Washington as part of a delegation of staffers from the German Bundestag. We met at the Hay-Adams where he had to stay (of course you know, Stefan wasn't paying for the hotel room). We took lunch at the Havana Cafe a few blocks cattywampus from the hotel.

You may find a couple of things missing from this page like the Pentagon and both major airports that serve the Washington area. The answer is simple- they're all in Virginia. Reagan National Airport and the Pentagon are in Arlington and Washington-Dulles International Airport is in Chantilly, Virginia, on the Fairfax-Loudoun county line about 20 miles (33 km.) from downtown Washington.

b1bob's excellent inaugural adventures

Since the 2004 election in November, a group of VTers decided to have a VT meeting in Washington during the presidential inauguration. John, Yubert, Tania, and a few others exchanged e-mails sorting out the details, big and small, up until inauguration eve. My only contribution to this exchange of ideas was recommending the Jaleo restaurant. I had attended another VT meeting at another location before. It was big enough to host a meeting and I could vouch for the food. What we all underestimated was all the cordons and detours which made it impossible to keep to plans to witness the inauguration and parade together. It wasn't until the day before when we knew where our tickets assigned us to view the inauguration and we stayed at different places throughout Northern Virginia. We finally were able to get together at Jaleo that afternoon and some reunited at Ned Devine's in Fairfax later that evening, but I ended up heading home just after Jaleo. Later that night, C-SPAN was rerunning the day's events and I saw my teal blue and black Carolina Panthers stocking cap in a spot where I know I was.

Pros:"The nation's capital is by nature a very international town."
Cons:"The traffic and the fact that almost everything is so expensive."
In A Nutshell:"It's a nice place to visit on a day trip."
