"The most beautiful friendly town" Kanton Solothurn by wild_wrose

I first went to Solothurn in August 2005 to work. I was there for 4 days and stayed at the hotel astoria. I was working at schaffner in Luterbach. During my first visit I didn't get much time to explore, but one of the engineers I was working with walked me back to the hotel along the river. Richard told me all about Solothurn. I was also taken for an evening meal to the Weissenstein - the highest mountain in that area of the Jura. We could have taken a cable car to the top but it was closed when we arrived. Normally you can see the alps from the restaurant, but that evening it was a bit overcast.

I next visited in October for 3 days. This time I got the chance to explore the old town.

I got the train from Zurich airport. The trains are long, clean and most importantly - always on time - something British Rail et al could improve!!! What's more, the fares aren't expensive either.

when I was at solothurn in august they had a travelling fair which sadly I didn't get the chance to see, but the travelling wagons (I think they're called bateaux) and the costumes I saw gave me the impression it would have been worth seeing. One day hopefully....

the peple of solothurn are friendly and kind, the streets are clean and cared for, the old town is beautiful, and the cathedral and mitte tower (now a theatre) and the multiple carved doors are exquisite.

to me it seemed a peaceful sleepy area, with woodland, mountains, the river, a large town, a good transport system and huge lakes not far away.

all in all a place I hope to visit again when I can have a proper vacation there
