Getting TO/AROUND: The local bus company is called: "OC Transpo" as I have already mentioned above.

There is a picture of a Transitway station at the west end. See travelodges. what you see on this image is a front of an OC Transpo bus. This is located in the Rideau Centre, in downtown Ottawa. That bus is not real but it does look real. Looks like a bus just came through the wall and got stuck in it.

Transitway stations are like hubs for the buses. Those are the places where you can catch your connection or purchase bus passes and / or bus tickets.
They have a computerized schedule reader in these terminals and you can also see these schedule readers in larger shopping centers.

Travel by Rail: Ride the O-Train

Getting TO/AROUND: Ride the O-Train once in Ottawa if you get a chance.

This type of local transportation is still an experimental stage and expected to expand in the near future. The train system has been developed by a famous Canadian company, Bombardier and it was implemented into the Ottawa urban epicenter to ease road traffic on the streets. The route is not very long but quiet interesting. The price of the ticket is only $2- which is not much and the train will take you from station Greenboro to Bayview. There are five stations all together. Each station has one platform for both directions of travel except Carleton Station which has a separate platform for each direction accessed via a pedestrian underpass. I hope the O-Train will expand in the future and we'll see more of these red, futuristic looking trains cruising around town.

There are also plans to create a high speed train going from Kanata to Orleans. These are the two districts at the opposite side of the city, (East end & West end) This would greatly loosen traffic on the already congested Highway 417 (Queensway)

Hope you have a chance to ride the O-Train when you come to Ottawa. If you do, enjoy! :)

Getting TO/AROUND: Public transportation is the best but you can rent a car if you have a credit card. There are nice wide roads with big green signs that tell your way. Queensway is the name of the highway that crosses Ottawa from east to west. This highway also connects you to other highways and major transit roads.
At the west end you can get to highway 416 that goes south and will get down to highway 401 which is the Trans Canada freeway.
Go east on the Queensway and get on highway 17. This takes you to Rockland and Orleans. Stay on the 417 and go east. This way you end up in Montreal.

There is also an International Airport in Ottawa. Check the web site for flights. Currently it is under-going an major reconstruction to make the terminal bigger, safer, nicer. All in all better. The grand opening of the new terminal is on October-12, 2003.

You can also get around on a bike or a boat. There are three rivers in Ottawa. The Rideau river, the Rideau Canal and the bigest is the Ottawa river.

Getting TO/AROUND: These beautiful, panoramic buses will take you from and to Ottawa in style... They have air-conditioning and superior comfort. Just can't beat the price and it is an excellent alternative to the plane or train.

You can get the ticket in advance on-line, on the phone or in person. There are several local bus companies that operate such buses. Check out the site enclosed below. Ride in style and stay cool while keep your money for other things besides transportation. The driver normally helps you place your luggage into cargo space before the journey. Buon Voyage! :)

Travel by Air: Daily flights to and from Frankfurt, Germany!

Getting TO/AROUND: Air Canada launched a new daily flight to and from Frankfurt, Germany. This way we don't have to travel to Toronto or Montreal to catch a connection flight. Frankfurt is one of the major European hubs, so from there it's easy to hopp on another, smaller flight in order to reach any European, Asian or Mid eastern city. This also made it much easier to fly into Ottawa, without a transfer on an another airport. This was a good idea, Thank you Air Canada!

Hi John. Looks like a lovely city you live in! Here in Dubai we also have an Amphi-bus, and German people seem to be just as proud of their front gardens as Ottawa-residents! My ratings are definitely with you. Greetings from the desert / Jess :-)
