My paradise and dream land is Greece!! The temple of Zeus at Olympia was constructed between 470 and 456 B.C. It was built using funds provided by the Elean defeat of neighboring Pisa, an example of the ongoing struggle for power in ancient Greece. The architect was a local man named Libon, and he designed the structure in the pure Doric style. The temple stood on a three step stylobate with a masonry ramp leading up to the center of the east facade. There were six columns on each facade and thirty-four in the entire colonnade. The temple was constructed of local limestone coated with a fine white stucco and had marble roof tiles. |
| | The Acropolis After climbing the steps up the mountain, you are at the entrance, or the Propylea, which was completed in 432.
The Parthenon and the other 2 buildings on the Acropolis were built by Pericles in the fifth century B.C. as a monument to the cultural and political achievements of the Athens people. |

November 2003: In 25 of March 2004 the Olympic Flame of Athens 2004 will light. The ceremony, 'Olympic Flame Touch' will take place in ancient Olympia, the birthplace of the Olympic Games. The day of the month was chosen for symbolic reasons, as in 25 of March 1896 the modern Olympics revived in Athens. Right after, the Olympic Flame will start its trip within Greece for 7 days. Torch-racers will carry it in all Peloponnese and in the Saronic Gulf islands with final destination the Athens' Panathenaic Stadium, the venue place of the first modern Olympics. The Olympic Flame will remain there until the 4th of June and then will start its global trip with the help of 11,300 torch-racers. Finally, the Olympic Flame will arrive in Athens for the opening ceremony of the 2004 Games. |
