"Windsor" Windsor by Lozza_9

I decided to visit Windsor and the castle as I can see the Castle from my office.

Windsor owes its origin to an earlier settlement know as 'Windlesora' Founded in the 7th Century and situated where the village of Old Windsor stands today. Here stood a Royal Manor where the great councils of England met in the 11th century. Nothing remains of the manor today. After the Norman Conquest in 1066, William the conqueror chose a steep chalk overlooking the River Thames to Build a stronghold of the earth and timber. This was just one of the ring of defenses around london and of strategic importance because the Thames was then the main trade route into the country. During the successive Norman and Plantagenet reigns, the castle steadily grew with importance so that by the time of Henry II, it had attained the proportians and Magnificence of a royal palace. The entire design and Character of the the castle owes much to the influence of both George III and George IV. Covering over 13 acres,it has become the favourite home of Queen, Elizabeth II

A Swan

Take a gentle walk along the river and feed the swans. All swans in the UK are protected by the Queen.

Windsor Park

This is a lovley Park. I have completed two Half Marathons in this park.

The Great Park is part of a vast Norman hunting chase, set in5,000 acres of Surry and Berkshire ciuntryside. Some of the park is private but most areas are open for the public to enjoy. The Long Walk is a 3 mile avenue of elm trees leading from the castle to statue of George III mounted on a copper horse. This is an historic landmark and commemorates the King's significant contribution to the development of the Great Park, which include the introduction of the farms that still thrive to this day
