Rotorua Things to Do

Hell's Gate: Hells Gate Rotorua's most active goethermal field
  • Tip Rating: [Not enough ratings yet]
  • At Helll's gate you will walk past steaming fumeroles and pools of boiling mud so violent they are unnerving. No need to heed the warning signs, you'll want to hug the path.

The walk through Hells gate takes about 1 hour.

    Cost: Adult $16 Child $8 ( under 16) Family $40

There's also med pools available. I would recommend them

    $50 Adult $20 Child $120 Family

    Wai-O-Tapu: WAI-O-TAPU
  • Tip Rating: [Not enough ratings yet]
  • This is the best Thermal pools I went to while in Rotorua. Loads of people go but its very large so its not to bad. If you have a choice between Hells Gate and WAI-O-TAPU, I would recommend WAI-O-TAPU.

    Buried Village: Buried Village
  • Tip Rating: [Not enough ratings yet]
  • We didn't plan to visit the Village, we didn't know about it we spotted a sign and decided to have a look.

This is an amazing place, really strange walking through a village which was lived in but destroyed by the Tarawera Volcano which erupted.

They have also dug out some of the mud so you can see how much mud actually went into the village and the homes.

They have a lovely pathway which links the excavated sites and enjoy the unspoilt native bush.

Open everyday from 9am except Christmas Day.

    Pictures to follow very soon

    Tamaki Maori Village: Tamaki Village
  • Tip Rating: [Not enough ratings yet]
  • This is a great evening out. The fun starts on the coach, they make you image you are on a boat and you have to row your way to the Village. They also choose a Cheif from each coach.
Once you arrive you are joined buy other coaches and you wait for the people form the Maori Village to greet you. They do a greeting ceremony with the cheifs - They ask everyone not to laugh as they are jumping around and pulling faces. It is classed as very disrepectful if you laugh.

Then you go into the village where the "Tangata Whenua" or people of the land will be demonstrating different activities such as poi twirling, hand games, weaponry displays and reciting chants. Then you go to the Whatenui ( The big house) for have a fantastic show and dance and music.
Then it time for the Hangi meal which is lovely. Vegetarians are also catered for.

After the meal you can walk around and look around the gift shops.

Some hotels do a similat thing but I hear they are not as good. This is a fab tour and not to be missed
