The island is accessed by a causeway called "The Strood". The Strood is part of the B1025 road that runs from Colchester direct to Mersea. During the higher tides the Strood is covered by the sea and becomes impassable except for vehicles with high ground clearance. As you go over the strood, Ray Island can be seen to your right. (tiny and uninhabited)As you turn right it takes you to West Mersea Town and Harbour. Turning left will take you to East Mersea and Cutmore Park.
There are all facilities in the little town, like a library, bookshops, Church, Garage, specialality gift shops. Fish Shop and Butchers and several shops for food. There are also a few pubs and restaurants, both in the town and by the harbour. The harbour itself has a charm of it's own with the houseboats.fishing and sailing boats etc lining the shoreline. Also the famous Sheds for your seafood, especially oysters. There are seats inside the shed, where you can purchase seafood platters and bring your own bread and wine. Plus new shed opened nearby. |
| | West Mersea Harbour West Mersea Harbour was a lovely peaceful sight on this lovely January Day. |

Really fine photographs to take us on your virtual tour. Thanks ever so much. | jgower Wed Dec 6, 2006 18:04 UTC Hi, I live on the Strood, and really enjoy the high tides. On a calm day probably one of the best places to live, overlooking Ray Island at the front, and Brightlingsea at the back. On a Wet, Cold day I can think of better places to live! | irishgalmtl Sat Nov 4, 2006 08:20 UTC Hello there Doreen, This looks like a nice place beautiful pis & what a flood wow..
