It is the custom when meeting Dutch friends & colleagues to kiss them three times on their cheeks (more than what I'm used in Ireland, that's if it is even done at all). It's pretty time-consuming if all you wanted to do was say "hello" :-) Later on during my stay, I realised that they start the kiss from the Right-Left-Right cheek ... of course I got it mixed up and kinda ended up kissing one Dutch friend on the mouth by accident. (silly me!!) Still, I did get to practise plenty of kissing elsewhere in Amsterdam, but that's another story ;-)

I managed to pick up a good bit of vocabulary when I was in Amsterdam, but then again, I speak pretty good German so I was able to work my way through a menu and simple newspaper articles. You're certainly not expected to be fluent in Dutch as a tourist, but just know a couple of phrases like "Dank U wel" for "thank you" is always appreciated.

Living in a country like Ireland where smokers are treated like wayward children is great when you are as anti-smoking as I am. ;) (BTW I don't object to someone's right to smoke, I just don't get why anyone would ever want to) From the time you get off the plane at Schiphol, the strong waft of cigarette smoke hits you in the face. I found it a bit hard to get used to, but smoking cigarettes and its stronger cousins is no big deal here, as you know ;-)
