I went down to Glendalough for an afternoon one weekend. I'd totally recommend it if you are into nature photography and ruins.
It is only 40 miles from my house, so I have no excuse for not going down there to explore the walks and nature trails. :)
Glendalough means Valley of the Two Lakes, which is exactly what you get, along with the Monastic Ruins of St. Kevin's settlement.
There are lots of colour-marked trails you can take around Glendalough for all levels, taking you up the Wicklow mountains if you can handle it.
Glendalough is part of the Wicklow National Park. There are no hotels, shops or nightlife in the park itself, that would spoil the beauty of the place, as it is a protected area, but you'd have to go to the nearby villages of Glendalough, Laragh and Roundwood if you want to use such facilities.
By the way, the nearest ATM is in Kilmacanogue on the main Dublin-Wexford road in case you're down to your last fiver. ;)
It was a real misty day the last time I was there. The waves were very choppy on the Upper Lake here.
- Pros:Great sense of history
- Cons:Too many tourists who don't really understand why the place is important and don't respect its history
