Kilkenny - go on the Cats!

Kilkenny Castle
Back in June 2002, we went down to Kilkenny for the Cat Laughs festival - see my Local custom tip for more info. It's always a popular one and many comedy acts are sold out weeks in advance.

Kilkenny was founded in the 6th cent by St Canice, whose bust is located in Parliament St. It was the irish capital during the medieval ages but after the English settled in Ireland, Dublin became more important and became the capital, thanks to it's easy proximity to Britian. Now Kilkenny is just another town (NOT a city, though BarryG23 is never going to agree with me on that one!). It's a good place to base yourself if you want to explore the South-East of Ireland.

Kilkenny is definitely one of my favourite Irish towns and one that more people really ought to visit.

We were back in Kilkenny for St Patrick's day 2003...the parade was pathetic so after a couple of minutes of watching farmers in green drag, gardai and tractors, we hit a few bars :) then again, I'm not a fan of St. Patrick's day anyway...

Kilkenny is renowned for it's original Norman architecture, unlike any other Irish city, so the best thing you should do is just take a few hours to walk around and just take in the atmosphere & surroundings. You'll see everything in the town within a day.
A long long time ago, we went to Kilkenny as part of a History school trip. We visited St Canice to ooooh and aaaah over the flying buttresses and other fab Gothic features of the church.

Pros:"Cheap drink! Wahoo!!"
Cons:"Thinks it's a city, when it is not! Shopping is'nt great"
In A Nutshell:"Very lively, you'll have plenty of craic here"
