Go to the University of Limerick and walk around the riverside grounds. This photo of the Shannon river was taken about 2 miles from the college residences. The University also boasts a large concert hall.

King's Island is the original Viking settlement, it used to be known as Englishtown. King Johns Castle and St Mary's Cathedral is located on this little island in the Shannon in the heart of Limerick. Trust me, they are so into rugby in that part of town!! :) You can follow the Medieval walks signposted around the Island. The Island isnt big but it's an integral part of Limerick city and it's history. Thomond Bridge is the bridge you see in the photo, connecting the Island to the north side of the city

It's over the Thomondbridge off the Ennis road, facing King Johns Castle. Yes its just a big old stone with a chipped corner. But it means a lot to local history & has come to symbolise Limerick in the same way Dublin's symbol is its castle. The treaty stone refers to the Treaty of Limerick signed in 1691 between the Irish/French and English/Dutch forces, signed on the actual stone. Actually, the reason why the stone is chipped away is that some ppl took some chippings and sold/kept them as souvenirs. Bet theyre probably for sale on E-bay or sthg...

Inevitably, the city has cashed in on the famous book Angela's Ashes, whilst slagging off Frank McCourt for critising social & living conditions in Limerick city during the 1930s. Walks are conducted around the streets where the McCourts would have lived. Not sure how much they cost, but you can check it at the tourist office on Arthurs Quay

St Mary's is Limerick's Protestant cathedral, located on Kings Island. In the summer, they do light & sound shows, which looks really cool

When the Hunt Museum was located in the University of Limerick back in 1995, I was doing one of those pre-college summer camp courses. One night after class, I was wandering around the campus, killing time until the evening activities started, when I kind of gatecrashed some kind of exhibition evening in the Hunt Musuem. Even better, there was wine! AND they gave me some! :-)Wahoo!! Given that I definitely didn’t look old enough to be served, this was quite a coup at the time ;-) In the meantime, the Hunt Musuem has moved into the city centre (Rutland St). When I went to the UL “version”, there was a remarkable display of ancient Celtic artefacts and undoubtedly, this collection has grown in the meantime.

Actually, they tell a lie - it is not THAT old because the area was only developed in the past 10-15 years! There is a really good bar there, popular with Limerick's bright young professionals.

Where many a Limerick teenager had their first kiss (except me :'( ) It is across the road from the rail and bus station, so you can't miss it. It is a nice place to go if you have time to spare waiting for your train or bus, or for a stroll or even for a little picnic. We used to go there for Art class (I went to school nearby) to sketch the flowers and trees. The gardens are quite lovely and are very well-kept.

mail2ireland Mon Jun 4, 2007 16:59 UTC Cruises cafe is gone as at 3 jun 07 also Java cafe and Captain Jacks (these latter two due to an apartment block developement) | pckujawa Wed Feb 7, 2007 19:14 UTC Where could one find the Cornmarket? And when does it occur, e.g. weekends-only, weekdays, 9-5, etc...? Thanks | tom171uk Thu Dec 7, 2006 18:03 UTC I've lived all my life in England. (How sad!) My mother grew up on the Island Field in the 30s. When I read Angela's Ashes, I was fascinated to find it was just like the tales she told. So Frank has not exaggerated the case too much, I am sure. | Bilimari Wed May 17, 2006 02:50 UTC Looong time no talk. How are you? I finally started to build my Limerick page, and remembered that you were from there. : ) |
