Bern is a capital city; my wife's favorite town in Switzerland and a Unesco's Word Cultural Heritage Place.

Bern earned its pivotal position through a history of power and influence that dates from the 12th century, when Berchtold V established a fortress on this gooseneck in the River Aare. He chose Bern not only for its impregnable location, but also for its proximity to the great kingdom of Burgundy, which spread across France and much of present-day French-speaking Switzerland. By the 14th century Bern had grown into a strong urban republic. And when the last Zahringens died, the people of Bern defeated their would-be replacements and became the 8th canton to join Swiss Confederation.
