Murten - Medieval Marvel

Old Town from the covered ramparts
Murten is one of the best-preserved medieval towns in Switzerland. The majority of the town’s inhabitants (73%) are German-speaking and call it Murten; a minority (14%) consider French as their mother tongue and call the town Morat.
Murten’s convenient location (45min. from Bern) makes the town a great daytrip destination
Haupthgasse - the Main street
Murten is situated between Bern and Lausanne and is the capital of the Lake District (canton of Fribourg). This small town lies on a gentle hill (450m above the sea level) on the shore of the lake. Numerous attractions from a significant past have been well preserve here, such as the castle, the ring wall, the medieval streets with arcades.
Catolic Church from the wall-walk
Inside the Murten’s walled Old Town you will find three streets which run parallel to the lakeshore, full of picturesque medieval vaulted arcades and facades. First street to the lake, Rathausgasse, is packed with hotels whose rear terraces afford prime views across the lake to the Vully vineyards. Parallel to the south are Hauptgasse e.g. Main street full with restaurants and shops; and, further south, tranquil Deutsche Kirchgasse. The best ways to see Murten is from the covered ramparts, accessible at a number of points along Deutsche Kirchgasse.

I will be in this town in two weeks enjoying a dinner with VT members. We will have to use your wise guide to find our way around the old town.
