Winchester, beautiful Hampshire capital, has so much to offer – magnificent Cathedral, lovely Victorian Guildhall, amazing Great Hall with famous King Arthur’s Table, two fortified medieval gateways (the Westgate and Kingsgate), Winchester College, several interesting museums (City Museum, the King’s Royal Hussars Museum, the Gurkha Museum, to name a few), and wide array of shops, pubs and restaurants. |
Two thousand years ago Winchester was one of the largest settlements in the Roman Britain when it was a walled city known as Venta Belgarum. Alfred the Great made it the capital of his Wessex kingdom in the 9th century. The first king of England, Egbert was crowned here in 827, and Winchester’s Great Hall was the seat of government until the Norman invasion in 1066. William the Conqueror had himself crowned in both London and Winchester. He also commissioned the local monastery to produce the Doomsday Book . During the Great Plague of 1665, Charles II moved his court to Winchester. In the more recent past, Jane Austin and John Keats lived and wrote in town. |

KittyLou Sun Nov 6, 2005 23:45 UTC You have created a very nice Winchester page. I found it interesting that Winchester is your favorite English Cathedral. I think I prefer Wells, Litchfield, and Peterbourgh. | Jehcekah Tue Apr 13, 2004 16:50 UTC Very good Winchester page!
