In the early 19th century, King Joseph Maximilian of Bavaria, to celebrate his own wedding inaugurated the world's largest beer drinking festival. And every year hence it has continued as Oktoberfest. Later, when his son Ludwig ascended to the throne, he set about replacing the old castles with fantastic new castles, and was later found dead in a lake after depleting the treasury with his extravagant spending.
Munich entered the 20th century as the cultural hub of Germany, attracting leading artists, scholars, etc, and eventually an Austrian with lackluster artistic ability.
After WWII, Munich and Bavaria were fortunately in the American sector and quickly led the German revitalization. Today, Bavaria and Munich are the most popular regions of Germany.
