Located in central Japan, the city of Nagoya has earned its reputation as a modern cosmopolitan city that still possesses all the unique charms of traditional Japan.

Nagoya's convenient location in the heart of the country affords easy access to travel destinations throughout Japan. The Shinkansen express train links Nagoya with Tokyo, Osaka, Kyoto and other major cities. The Nagoya International Airport offers direct flights to many of the world's major cities; its numerous domestic flight destinations are a gateway to Japan.

Tokugawa Ieyasu, the legendary feudal lord acknowledged for his statesmanship, bringing about the unification of Japan and ending centuries of warring, built Nagoya castle at the beginning of the seventeenth century. This marked the beginning of the city of Nagoya, and for about the following 250 years the lords of the castle patronized the arts and encouraged the growth of cultural traditions, such as the tea ceremony and Noh theater. Their support also aided the successful development of such industrial arts as ceramics.
