Rotorua....land of geysers & hot springs

by sunnywong - last update: Mar 9, 2003

Rotorua is in a region that is still volcanically active and the landscape as seen today has been largely shaped by swift, violent and cataclysmic volcanic forces. Underground heat and faults in the rock from volcanic activity, combined with water, allow the water, mud and steam access to the surface. Famous examples are the thermal valleys of Waimangu and Waiotapu and the Whakarewarewa thermal reserve. Thus, in the district today, the landscape continues to be formed as dynamically as in the past.

Rotorua is the heartland of New Zealand Maori culture, and visitors have the opportunity to experience the warm spirit of Te Maori. Although most of the Maori population live in the urban areas, there are about 35 marae (meeting grounds) in the Rotorua district. You may be lucky to enough to stay as a guest on a marae - an unforgettable experience. Or you could catch a Maori cultural performance, where stories are relayed through beautiful song and dance. You can also indulge in a traditional hangi feast - the food is cooked below the ground in earthen ovens
