Rotorua is in a region that is still volcanically active and the landscape as seen today has been largely shaped by swift, violent and cataclysmic volcanic forces. Underground heat and faults in the rock from volcanic activity, combined with water, allow the water, mud and steam access to the surface. Famous examples are the thermal valleys of Waimangu and Waiotapu and the Whakarewarewa thermal reserve. Rotorua is the heartland of New Zealand Maori culture, and visitors have the opportunity to experience the warm spirit of Te Maori.
