by sunnywong - last update: Nov 29, 2002

Chia-yi County has been known for its beautiful landscape. There are three groups of mountains in this area:

Main Yu Mountains-the main peak Yu Mountain at the elevation of 3997 meters, the highest in Taiwan. Western Yu Mountains-the main peak Western Yu Mountain at the elevation of 3523 meters, famous for the beautiful Ali Mountain forest district, Here is the only one mountainous region of the county, the Ali Hsian, where about three thousand natives of Ts'ao Tribe live. Southern Yu Mountains-the main peak Southern Yu Mountain at the elevation of 2391 meters.

Ali Mountain Forest Park

Alishan is known for its five wonders, the alpine reilway, forest, sea of clouds, sunrise view and sunset panorama. The area is rich in forest resorces. Among its natural scenery are the sister basins, Alishan divine trees, Tzuyun Temple, tree Spirit Tower, Tsushan vantage point, Minyueh railway section, etc. The sunrise view of Alishan is a renowned wonder. The best place to see this view is from Tsushan. The position and hours of sunrise in Alishan change with the seasons.

Wonderful pictures. That train trip to Alishan sounds like a fantastic trip. 77 bridges in 77km means a lot of valleys.

Very nice page - thank you! My brother lives in Chiayi city now (teaching English) and was telling me about the places to hike in the mountains near there - it is nice to see it at last!
