The Encumeada Pass and Paul da Serra

Turned even more showery and cloudy today. Took advice from our hosts in reception to try a drive across to Porto Moniz in the north west of the island via the Encumeada Pass and then ER110 westwards through the Paul da Serra. They said weather might be clearer up there and in the North…they were wrong, could see the potential in fine weather but in cloud a waste of time.

In Porto Moniz, thankfully with the sun out once we descended from the hills, we found a pleasant little seaside town. It had a remote, relaxing atmosphere in contrast to the hustle and bustle of the southern Capital, Funchal.

In the Summer, families and their young children make good use of the natural rock pools that fill up with sea water.

These qualities, together with a few reasonable shops and restaurants make this part of the island a typical day trip for coach tour operators

Pros and Cons
  • Pros:A pleasant resort to stroll and view the north coast
  • Cons:Lengthy trip from Funchal or eastern regions
  • In a nutshell:Unremarkable by island standards

I completely agree that Moniz is nice contrast to the "hustle-bustle" Funchal. Thanx for your opinion :)
