Morocco at the extreme of North Africa (thus Maghreb, from the west) had hosted a jewish community for at least two thousand years. It is one of the most interesting jewish communities in the world, until the mass exodus in 1956 when Morocco became independent from the French.
Berbers or Amazigh are the original inhabitants of this land, thought to be autochthonous to northern part of Africa, Arabs are recent comers with the arrival of Idriss. Soon after Ai Tariq went on to conquer Spain. I was told that the spanish term Morros or Moors denoted them to be of Mauritania. There is a fair bit of racial mixing in the country, so that you wont be surprised to find Berber Jews
When walking around the streets of Marrakech, two things become apparent, there is a fair bit of mixing of blood with the Africans and that the Africans seem to have been integrated into the Moroccan society.
I couldnt believe when told that the slavery of this sort existed in Morocco until very recently, even up until the time of Hassan II
Berberes who are the original inhabitants include Touaregs, the nomadic people that we associate Tombouctou with.
One other thing one soon recognize is that Morocco is an Arab Speaking Country but it is not really an Arab country, it is the country of the Berbers with Arabs and other people thrown in.
- Pros:Easy to reach, Good transportation
- Cons:Constantly hassled by young and old when you are walking around
- In a nutshell:It is as magical as you wish to make it, no wonder so many Gringos have moved here.. from Europe and America
