You must read Bruce Chatwin, possibly the greatest travel writer of his generation. His book The Viceroy of Ouidah was made into a film, with Klaus Kinski in the lead. It was filmed at the historic slave fort of Elmina on the slave coast of Ghana. He has written about his experiences of travel in Benin when it was still called Dahomey.
The purpose of my visit was to ascertain the cuba-dahomey connection ( yoruba religion of cuba originated hereabouts ). I was amply rewarded with a visit to Ouidah. |
