along with Sydney, Cape Town and Buenos Aires... | Cable cars from all over the world ply here |
San Francisco is consistently named as one of the more charming cities of the world. I was lucky to be here for one week, during the day attending a medical conference at the Westin St Francis Hotel (Lovely!) and in the evenings exploring the various eating establishments of this diverse city. Having so many asians milling around, I was reminded of Kuala Lumpur (SF is much much prettier than KL! the people of SF are more friendly), because the faces are chinese mostly, some japanese and some korean..and I felt good as I thought I was back in Asia. The buildings are mostly from the 1900-1930 era and there are quite a few to look at. The bay is there and an excursion on it is a must. There are plenty of tourists, let them enjoy a bit of this wonderful place as well.. |
| bite sized food at Cav 1666 Market St SF |
| | The best food I have tasted in the USA I have always thought of E F Schumacher when it came to dining: Small is Beautiful In SF, you can have taste size wine, small glass of wine, a full glass of wine. Also in some restaurants, a bite size or a small size or a regular portion of food ordered. Truly a gourmet paradise, this small size allows you to enjoy more of the dishes.. just last night at CAV 1666 Market between Franklin and Gough, we tasted no less than 15 various dishes, each good in their mouthwatering way. The reds we drank.. france portugal australia california all tasted good and I wanted more variety.. and one feels satiated rather than full.. |
| homelessness is everywhere |
| | It is a shame, Homelessness... Homelessness is a big problem in all the cities of the USA and in many parts of the world. but there is a big difference, the homeless people look positively ill:physically and mentally. They are polite and not aggressive but in the majority, they are blacks. Let this be a reminder for those who live in USA to look after their own. Do not blame the victims!
I adored the fact that there were so many asians in town. The newcomers are not as friendly as those born in this country, but there is enough smiles to go around.
Reasonably well served by public transportation, no need to own a car, with buses and trolleys and the occasional taxis. The taxi drivers were recent immigrants from Asia and were not all that friendly or helpful (perhaps language difficulties) |

| Pros: | "Lovely City, Gay Ambience, Great Food, Friendly People" | | Cons: | "Homelessness evident more in the central districts" | | In A Nutshell: | "No wonder this is often compared to Sydney and Cape Town and Buenos Aires" |
