"Capital of the State of Delta Amaucuro" Tucupita by cochinjew

Tucupita Travel Guide: 20 reviews and 38 photos

Friendly, rural feeling and gateway to the Delta

Tucupita was chosen as the capital of then territory of Delta Orinoco, when it had just three houses! but it has since grown to a fair size town, with important populations of criollos, warao indians and guyanese immigrants. To add colour, there are chinese who owns all the supermarkets..
It is a peaceful town, so peaceful that you better not plan on doing anything here on Sunday including travel elsewhere. But now connected to the outside world with fast internet, cellular phone and regular bus services, Tucupita sits at one of the branches of the river which has been closed to river transport.

Safe Venezuelan Outpose

This is a good place to rest and stock up before setting out to the delta. Do you really need a guide? if you want someone to arrange your trip, certainly you do. But the people are friendly enough and the boats are there to take you to the delta. I met a tourist guide from tucupita expeditions who tried to instill fear by telling stories of robbery and piracy in the delta. I thought to myself, he is doing a poor job, since I am not afraid of what he was saying and I certainly dont wish his services. I would avoid that agency, if people who work there are like him

get invited for dinner or lunch

I had no problem getting invited for dinner or lunch. There are restaurants in town but limited in scope and taste. The friends are easily made and invitations extended. I ran into a cuban doctor from Habana Vieja here in this house of an East Indian Merchant
