I chanced upon this restaurant during my previous visit (was it 14th or 15th? does it matter?) to Yangon.
But the inspection of the house and its content brought back another connection.. of my late father visiting these premises during the time of independence. I felt i was on a pilgrimage, so it was only natural for me to invite a visitor from KL and two workers from the WHO to dine with me at this restaurant.
The gift of this visit was Ko Pyit who is the assistant manager who made sure our dinner was an experience, gave us complimentary dessert and also took 20 per cent off our bill. The more gracious gesture on his part was to send us in his car back to our hotels.
Favorite Dish: The Burmese amongst us chose European food, the european recently arrived chose a cautious dish. my self and my friend from KL were in good mood and were willing to try anything.. i would say the taste is somewhat between burmese and chinese, as is the case in these upscale restaurants in Yangon. I wouldnt call the quality superb but it is comparable to other restaurants of this genre. there was music playing, a full bar was on ( i had a pina colada) and the ambience was excellent. finished up the meal with a guided tour of the house ( i was the guide) for my friends..
Quite reasonably priced , woth every Kyat for the ambience.. and the friendliness of Ko Pyit..

The Myanmar Chinese food has a strong local flavour (much like the Indian Chinese Restaurants with their Gobi Manchurian) and it is always a better bet for dinner time as the food is fresher at that time. Bamar food is prepared in the morning so it is better for Lunch.
Feel is a group of restaurants, i had dined at Feel 2 but it is no more but Feel 3 has come about. on this rainy night, a short taxi ride from the centre, we were at the Feel 3 Resto. very efficient service in fact they write down what time the food was ordered and at what time it was delivered, it was about ten minutes. the usual nouveau look to the resto and very good service. a glass of wine would have been nice, but alas this is Yangon.

Chettys are originally from Southern India and they are trades supreme. In fact they were in Malaysia before the Malays became Moslems!!
they are to be found all over the world where they had gone trading, including parts of the world one does not expect to find immigrant indians, there were Chettys who travelled with the well known chinese navigator Zheng He
Favorite Dish: You can order the meal for the day which would consist of various curries and condiments
Comparison: less expensive than average
Price: less than US$10

I am writing this on 2nd March 2006. I am here for five days. almost all my meals would be at this restaurant owned by ms eithwe aung, owner of the travel agency that assists me with just about everything. I have invited my little friends from the beach at chaungtha so we are a bit crowded at the place.. five of them came. very very attentive needless to say. this is in sanchaung township and there are other tea shops and restaurants nearby, but this one is always full .. by the way even though this place is quite near the centre of town, you would never see a foreigner here..
Favorite Dish: I have had a wide variety of food in this restaurant. various meat dishes, fish in chili sauce, potatoes, traditional pickled tea, and many more. the girls who work here are from a small village near taungwa, ma gyauk ken. the youngest of them can make a very tasty fruit juice.. just so rightly mixed.. today i had papaya juice and then pineapple juice..
to cool off at nights, it is good to sit out there sipping large glasses of freshly squeezed juices.
Address: 165 baho road at the corner of pan ta naw street
Comparison: less expensive than average
Directions: sanchaung township, baho road and the taxi driver will take you there. usually around one dollar taxi ride from downtown or schwedagon pagoda area.. I am staying at Excel Treasure hotel and it is just one dollar to go there..

this upmarket bakery and pizzeria with incredible service is in front of aung san stadium. all sorts of cakes and pastries. when you are off to visit a burmese home, it would be a good idea to stop here and buy a few cakes
Favorite Dish: I tasted for the first time a green tea cake here. strange taste, acquired i suppose

The atmosphere is straight out of Madras India.. faces the fragrances and of course the food.
Favorite Dish: I had an indian style tea while chatting with a friend and observing the strange mixture of symbolism.. only in myanmar have i found.. hindu budhists people who believe in both religions and have no conflict. this establishment was a tamilhindubudhist..

You enter another world altogether when you enter the glass doors of the Sedona Hotel away from the hustle of the down town area in Yangon.
Italian Chef and Myanmar Staff complement one another in this good restaurant with an imaginative menu.
this is a good place for that special lunch.. air conditioned, no bother from anybody, discreet service and good food and you have all the time in the world to talk which you came for..
Favorite Dish: Lobster tails with risotto
Lemon Juice. Too hot to drink wine at lunch time eventhough a reasonable wine list, barely reasonable, was available. Expresso coffee to finish off.
More than the food I enjoyed my conversation with an author and publisher who lives in Yangon who also happens to be a doctor and interested in tribal peoples
Address: At Sedona Hotel

Price: US$21-30

I asked for Thai style noodles, something along the lines of Pad Thai and they served it with meat.. I did the unforgivable sin of asking.. hope no pork in it ( i am jewish and dont eat portk). We are moslems sir, said a slightly offended waiter who soon resumed his smile.
Favorite Dish: The quality of the food is similar to what you could make at home from those ready made packets of thai noodles one can buy all over asia. nothing that special. but nice to sit down after walking all around downtown rangoon
Address: upper bli bo son pat street

Directions: downtown rangoon
