I was flying from Miami to San Francisco. It was the last leg of my flights as I was returning from Montevideo Uruguay after the ICANN conference. It was Sept 11, 2001, around 10am ET. As I was enjoying my business class amenities I noticed on the flight monitor that we were losing altitude. Normally the plane should be around 35000 feet. But we were gradually closer and closer to the ground. I could see cars moving on the highways...
The pilot said nothing as we got closer and closer to the ground. Finally the PA announced that we should roll our seats up, put away the trays, and prepare for landing. There was no explanation as to why. 10 minutes later we were on the ground, and finally the pilot's voice came over the PA:
"We had an emergency landing at Oklahoma City. We were instructed by the FAA to land as quickly as possible. There have been reports that a terrorist group had flown a plane into the World Trade Center."
I wandered for a few minutes, dazed and not believing anythihng I had heard. Until I saw on the terminal TV monitor that one of the tower had collapsed... and it hit me that the world had changed. As I looked out to the airfield, a SouthWest jet just came in for landing, and I caught this picture with my camera.
