SEXBIERUM..Whats in a name? hehe

SEXBIERUM // SEX, BEER, RUM...

It's not the sex, beer, rum only what you can get in sexbierum!! hehe
It's a beautiful town in the province friesland in the north of the netherlands/

Sexbierum is a small village in the north of the Netherlands. It has about 1800 inhabitants, together with the village Pietersbierum. Both villages have grown connecting each other, so most people see it as a double-village partnership.

Sexbierum is located some 7 kilometers north from both Harlingen and Franeker, two of the famous (?) eleven cities of Friesland, one of the two most northern provinces of the Netherlands.

The name is derived from Sixtus-buren, the place of the Saint Sixtus. After Saint Sixtus also the local church is devoted.
The Frisian name Seisbierrum is believed to be derived from Six-roadsides (Frisian: seis bjirmen), designating the six roadsides of a tri-way road: Sexbierum is located at a very ancient roadcrossing.

You can see the masts of ships when the sea is high and the boats came in near the dikes. And in winter is great to skate for many miles on the canals.

Friesland famous for the lakes, the ice skating and the élf steden tocht, the elven-city ice skate event, and the famous liquor i looove to drink : Berenburg !! :o)

Sexbierum is the birthplace of my grandparents who came to America in 1923. Any and all information on Sexbierum would be greatly appreciated.

In Leeuwarden I saw a bus heading Sexbierum. I was interested in the origin of name. Thank you for explanation!
