I went to Nuku Hiva in french Polynesia. I got there by ship, sailed from San Francisco while working on "semester st sea" program-Cal State University. I did this first in 1999.
In 2002 I returned twice to Nuku Hiva. Nothing has changed much. It is still a quiet place. This time I saw the Aranui, a ship that arrives 15 times a year with supplies aboard. Arriving from Tahiti, it carries passengers from there to several islands in French Polynesia, giving folks a chance to visit this strange island.
If you are visiting this part of the world a must read is " The Happy Isles of Oceania," by Paul Theroux. I also read Herman Melville's first novel, "Typee" while I was there. (It is pronounced TIE-Pee.) The name of the town is Taipivai. It is a fascinating tale based on his real 4 month adventure there in the 1800s after jumping ship.
