These pictures are my attempt to show the DC that tourists rarely see. I hope they inspire you to visit and spend some time looking beyond the regular sights. Up and to the right you'll see my travelogues. The first travelogue is the Aquatic Gardens. This is about 15 minutes by car from the Capitol. The second is the 2002 Smithsonian Folk Life Festival, (June-July 2002) which celebrated The Silk Road, the ancient route through the middle and far East from Venice to China. Neither will show you the monuments, but there's plenty of that elsewhere. I've tried to show you the hidden side of the capital, that pretty much only gets seen by people who live here and the lucky tourist that is in the right place at the right time. The picture is of the Smithsonian Garden's donkey. Lots of cities in the US now have similar animal sculptures, mostly fish (New Orleans, Erie and Baltimore) but only we have donkeys and elephants. Donkeys symbolize the Democratic Party, and Elephants the Republicans. The Elephants are in control right now. |
