To be honest, in this city I did not needed to use any taxi as all other measures of transportations were working perfectly so we didn't needed to use any taxi. But the good point is that in many locations taxi's are easily available just in case you need one.

By no means I do not mean that you can go everywhere and see all this city only by foot. But being more of a traditional city and not such industrial center Kyoto is very nice city to see by foot. Just have you good sandals with you as we had and no problems :)

Kyoto has also small Subway system of only two lines that connecting few of the main stations in and around this city. This can be very useful if you happened to be by one of the stops.

Riksha's are available in some places but not that common, maybe more in the torist area's temples and small streets I saw those which can be somehow nice adventure for a short ride. However, it was over 30°c while we were there, two European size people and we felt pity for the "driver" if we would use it, so we skipped it ;-)

The city buses are easy to use, rather frequent and can take you almost to any tourist spot in this city. In the evening the buses are not so frequent so be aware of that. In Japan you pay the bus when you leave and you better have the exact money in cash.

Bicycle is very popular and useful way to see this city if you want to avoid traffic or crowded buses. Kyoto is mostly flat which shouldn't be much of a problem to explore the city this way.

The easiest way to get to and from Kyoto is by train. The train station is just by the city center and it is fast connection to Tokyo, Osaka and Osaka Kansai international airport. By no means, if your main destination in Japan is Kyoto, fly to Osaka, not to Tokyo as it is much closer.
