Cruise ship destination wannabe

Progreso offers a great geographic location for a cruise ship stop from Galveston. The government has built a 5 mile long pier to accomodate the ships and this has been a financial godsend for the town.

As you pass through town you can tell it has been a struggling community for may years. I'm not aure if it is the Federal, State, or local government that is footing the bill for the expansion but it is underway at full speed.

We did not spend any time in town as we went on an excursion from our cruise ship to some Mayan ruins.

Elation

The cruise ship Carnival Elation at the pier. The ship was really big and there is still enough room for three more ships. The Mexicans are thinking big about this location.

The Band

Do you know the "Mexican Hat Dance"?

A mariachi band was there to welcome us. The photo is foggy because my lens fogged up as soon as I removed the cover to take the shot. Like all cruise excursions, we were being hustled along so i did not have the luxury of waiting to let it defog itself.

Pros and Cons

Pros:Small and has not been ruined yet
Cons:Hot and humid with not many tourist options
In a nutshell:A good stopping point that will develop with some time and money

Bikinis and beer = Rip Off Tourist Traps (1)

Ha ha, but buying the Corona from the ugly dude and looking at the bikini gal is OK? You cruise-types get special treatment. Those Dzibilchaltun shops are only there for cruises. Nice page. I hope Progreso does not get ruined.
