Budapest - Kumbuysumtingbolt

by american_tourister - last update: Jun 28, 2007

A week alone for relaxation

The famous statue on the Danube River
I was in Bosnia and found out I would be going to Iraq. I had an R&R planned for Jamaica with my wife but it would not fit the new schedule. Because of this I had to take my R&R because it was a "use it or lose it" policy. I chose to use it and went to Budapest.

Budapest was close and it only cost me $25.00 US to get there from Bosnia. Our company van drove us to Pecs and we took the train from there.

I had a great time. I missed having this trip with my wife but being alone I blazed a trail that I could not have done with her and our son Tanner. I was surprised at every turn and had no bad experiences whatsoever. I highly recommend Budapest to the traveler who is bored with the other great capitols of Europe.

I am just starting this page but will add more as I go. The title has a made up word but that is what Hungarian (Magyar) looked like to me. I learned how to say "Thank You" and "Please" and that anything ending in ...bolt is a shop. So that explains Kum-buy-sumting-bolt.

Oh yeah, if you wave your hand and say "Lacy Drawers" everyone gets a drink. That one was really useful and makes lots of friends.
I am here, wish you were fine.

Another self portrait

This was atop Gellert Hill. The hill is named after St. Gellert. he was the priest who brouth Christianity to the pagan Magyars. For his efforts he was tortured and rolled down the hill in a barrel to the Danube River.

I chose a day when I was hung over to hike to the top. You can't see it here but I reeked of alcohol laced sweat. Thank God the German tourists who took my photo were already hammering the beer. They could not smell me for the suds they were holding.
Not so blue Danube

The Danube River

No chapter on Budapest would be complete without mention of the Danube River. It truly is a great river and divides the towns of Buda and Pest from each other. The towns do have a different flavor and I preffered Buda as it is calmer, more serene and made for some great walking tours.

Pros:"Not overrun with tourists like other European Capitols"
Cons:"A very, very difficult language unlike any other."
In A Nutshell:"Go with open eyes, don't expect too much, and you will love it."

We loved Budapest too! finally got there just last year, so I think the number of tourists is up, but it was still great.
