I probably never would have come here if I had not been assigned a job in Bosnia. Zagreb is where we would fly in and out of for transport into and out of Bosnia.
At my going away party my very intoxicated nephew looked at me and asked where I was traveling through. I told him I would be going through Zagreb. He blinked and said, "Dude, it sounds like some alien planet name. Like, the dude steps out of the flying saucer and says, I am Zilgar from Zargeb." There was a lot of laughter at that.
I was pleasantly surprised with Zagreb. All of my experiences with cities that had been Communist before 1990 had shown me crumbling towns with terrible crime and trash problems. Zagreb is safe and clean. It has many friendly people and they love their town.
Zagreb is off the beaten path for most but it is a nice respite from the destruction we saw every day in Bosnia.
I enjoyed my time there. I never really got to spend more than a few hours at a time exploring Zagreb and really never got out of the city center but I found it to be very interesting. I wish I had more time to just relax and enjoy.
FLASH! - Thanks to vt member diocletianvs for helping me out with a lot of information. It was great, thanks pal! |

| | Charming Streets I walked all through Zagreb and not once did I ever feel uneasy or unsafe. There are interesting buildings where there are apartments right above businesses all over town.
Zagreb is a good walking town. There are wide streets with well defined side walks. |
| | Reminders It is easy to forget that Croatia and Zagreb have such a recently tragic past.
WWII was a disaster for Croatia as they sided with the Axis and this was not forgotten when Yugoslavia was formed. There was a vicious war of independance when they broke away from Yugoslavia but fortunately it did not break down into Civil War like what happened in Bosnia.
There are reminders every once in a while that this was part of Yugoslavia. I did not see any Communist symbols but there are signs like this. |

(I assume you meant walking, not "wlkainng") | polardabar Sat Nov 19, 2005 16:18 UTC haha, zilgar from zagreb! well, we do get a lot of those actually... i just wonder why the city's filled with tourists... ;) cheers from the alien planet! polar* btw. it's cold as h*ll, so it feels like a super freezing planet... | MissyWQ Mon Dec 6, 2004 13:38 UTC Love your enthusiasm (warmth, zeal) for every place you visit. |
