I read a lot of guide books which slammed this monument as pretentious, overbuilt, and not in synch with the surrounding buidling designs. All of this is true but what they don't tell you is that it has a terrific museum to the fight to make Italy a Union. They even have a boot that Garibaldi was wearing when he was shot in battle. Downstairs is an entire Motor Torpedo Boat from some skirmish in WWII. It also has a terrific view and is well worth the climb. My best low light photos of the forum were from the top of the monument. Some times it pays to be crass and tasteless. Visiting this monument is one of those times.

A long, long climb up steps placed in a severe angle. Tne payoff is that you get to enter a fabulous church located in a remarkable setting. It is worth the climb just to look at the faces of other out of shape tourists as they clinb up while you go down.

Where some of Rome's real treasures are located. It is behind the Victor Emmanuel Monument and up a ramp designed by Michalangelo. Ther are two museums and they are connected by an underground tunnel. It offers some of the best examples of Roman and Pre Roman art and artifacts in all of Rome. It houses the statue of the mother wolf with the twins Romulus and Remus. This is the symbol of Rome.

Yep, it's old. Real old, but it is still a functioning building that houses a church. It is one of the only examples of intact Roman buildings left in the city. It has a amazing design. The only light is from the hole in the top of the roof. It has tombs of famous dead Italian guys and one of those is the tomb of Victor Emmanuel. I thought it was the wrong place and that he should have been buried at his big cheesy monument. We thought the Bangladeshi street vendors outside made its a weird sight. They speak almost no Italian but passable English. I wound up buying a fish shaped bubble gun from one of them for 5 euros.

Villa Borghese is the Roman version of Central Park. It has rolling hills, museums, a zoo, and a nice park. We took a sack lunch to the park and just hung out there. We visited the zoo and one of the little museums while we were there. I guess what I liked best was that it was not crowded. You can see in the photo that we had that part of the park almost all to ourselves.
