MYSTERY AND MAGIC

Here we are at the famous Avebury stone ring. Avebury's first stones started to appear about 2800 BCE. The building continued for 5 centuries.

Apparently, the stones were dragged from the combes in the hills above Avebury using a combination of man-power, oxen and gravity. Unlike Stonehenge, the origin of the stones is known.

MORE PICS OF AVEBURY

Avebury stands on the Marlborough Downs 24 miles north of Stonehenge, 6 miles west of Marlborough, 12 miles south of Swindon, 8 miles north-east of Devizes, and 7 miles east of Calne.

Some of the stones have face carvings.

Beautiful pictures of the standing stones, much, much better than any I took. I did not realize that Avebury was located within the stone circle until I actually got there!

Pity these stones don't get as much attention as their more famous neighbour.
