  • The Wallace Collection is both a national museum and also among the best collections of art ever put together by one family. It was bequeathed to the UK by Lady Wallace, widow of Sir Richard Wallace, in 1897. One is amazed by the staggering collections of French 18th-century pictures, porcelain, furniture,17th-century paintings and fantastic swords and armoury.

    It's open 10-5 except December 24-26.

  • The Cathedral lies on the South Bank of the River Thames close to London Bridge on a site occupied by a Church for over one thousand years. The main structure of today's church was built between 1220 and 1420.

    Things To Do: BOROUGH MARKET

  • If you love food and want to see how real Londoners shop on the weekend, this is the place to come. It's only open on Fridays and Saturdays and the place gets packed. The prices aren't bargains, but the homemade breads and jams are worth the trip. It's close to the Tate Modern and the Globe.. enjoy a walk along the South Bank while you're in this neighborhood.. and look for Clink Street. The best coffee is to be found across the street at Monmouth Coffee Company.

Things To Do: OLD SPITALFIELDS MARKET

  • Old Spitalfields Market is a huge, indoor space with the largest amount of merchandise to be found on a Sunday. It's best to go early before the crowds set in. I thought the things for sale, especially the designer jewelry, were of high quality. There are tons of places to sit down and eat - highly recommended to me was the Arkansas Cafe if one wants a good burger. This area is very old and was once the home to a large Jewish population - some remnants of their existence there are still visible. Christ Church Spitalfields, across from the Market is a handsome building with a long history. It has a dramatic Georgian steeple rising from a grand portico. The area, near Liverpool Street, seems to be undergoing a huge renaissance - many new buildings and shops are under construction and will certainly change the atmosphere of the neighborhood.

    Things To Do: PETTICOAT LANE

  • How many markets can say they are 400 years old??

Sunday is the day for walking down Petticoat Lane (near Liverpool Street) and trying to find some bargains in the way of clothing, shoes, linens, towels, leather goods etc. The market is actually on Wentworth Street and fans out to all adjoining streets in the area.I don't particularly like the mob scene but it was fun doing once ... on our way to Brick Lane and Spitalfields Market. I thought the handbags were of good quality for the money as were the large array of suitcases.. all sizes and shapes.

Monday to Friday, and on Sundays from 9.00 to 14.00

Soho and the West End: THE WEST END

  • London Soho and the West End
  • Near Drury Lane Theatre
  • by zuriga , 1 more photos

  • I took this photo across the street from the Drury Lane Theatre. It's typical of the side streets of the West End... aka Theatreland. In the evening, before a performance, the streets are filled with people on their way to see one of the West End's many productions. This day, I was on my way to the Drury Lane to see The Producers.. highly recommended if it's still running. I realized I'd been to that theatre almost 20 years before to see a preview of Miss Saigon. Nothing at all had changed.

I like wandering the back streets. One photo here is a newly washed court - on a Winter's afternoon.

  • Leicester Square is home to the TKTS booth. One can purchase theatre tickets on the day of a performance at greatly reduced prices. It's practically deserted in winter, especially for matinees. Chinatown is right around the corner, and it's a short walk over to Covent Garden, too. That's not snow on the grass... it's just a covering.

Thank you for your kind comment on my Haarlem page. Preparing a new visit to London I looked with much interest to your restaurant reviews, especially the Indian ones. As for Van Goch the Musée d'Orsay has some of his best paintings as you have seen.
