Verdun is a little off the beaten path and not far from Metz. It is worthy of a trip as the history of the famous battles have been well preserved and documented. Despite the French efforts to clean the battlefields, they are routinely finding unexploded artillery shells which rise to the surface usually after heavy rains...these include high explosives as well as chemical (mustard gas and phosgene). There is a separate department in each of the french regions who are devoted to the clearing of these weapons. I was told during my visit that over time, considering that there were several wars in this region, over 6 shells per square meter is the density of fire that covered the battlefields of Verdun. |
