South Africa is one of the most beautiful countries I know. I travel there about twice a year on business, and I've done a bit of vacationing in the country also. The photo above is my sister Helen (right) and my friend Kathy, who came with me on my first trip through the Western Cape in March 2000.

South Africa gets some bad foreign press as far as safety concerns and the country's still-segregated society. I find the safety issues to be exaggerated, as always when you're dealing with the international press. The segregation, which at this point is de facto rather than de jure, was a bit jarring to me as an American. Not that our society isn't self-segregated too, but South Africa is an extreme case. On my first trip there I was left wondering, in a country that is more than 80% non-white, where all of those people were? The SA business world is even more of a white enclave, which is kind of depressing but I suppose understandable. I hope for a more integrated future for this lovely country.
